Here’s what you can expect during our work together.
Therapy is all about you. Each therapy session is led by you and you can share as much or as little as you feel comfortable. You might focus on a specific goal or you may want to process emotions and events as they arise. Therapy can be a wonderful opportunity to unpack your story, find & reclaim your voice, and honor your journey through reflection, verbally sharing, and learning to be with your emotional experiences. . I will work to create an environment that feels both physically & emotionally safe and is unique to you. I utilize non-judgmental, reflective listening and compassionate curiosity to help clients identify patterns, create new narratives, and nurture an internal sense of safety & security. I may prompt questions to help deepen or further explore your emotions, thoughts, and awareness. I may incorporate practices such as mindful breath work, art exercises, or journaling in session. I do not give advice or tell clients what to do; however, I will be with you and support you as you seek to live out your most authentic self. This might entail softening fear that often comes with making important decisions. It may involve learning to speak to yourself in a compassionate manner. Or it may look like thinking out loud in a non-judgmental environment.
I have worked with clients for as little as 8 weeks and as long as 5+ years. I typically see clients on a once a week or every other week basis. Your session frequency and the longevity of our work together will be tailored to you and your needs. I tend to enjoy long term work (6 months+) as it prevents us from rushing your healing process and may reduce the risk of traumatizing and/or re-traumatizing you.
Therapy is an emotional investment. While it would be awesome to wave a magic wand and magically alter your circumstances, your thought process, or your emotions, therapy isn’t quite that simple. You may have some weeks where you feel amazing walking away from a session. Other weeks you may feel frustrated when things don’t progress as quickly as you hoped. You may find it strange to talk about yourself for an extended period of time. Your relationships may shift and the relationship you have with yourself may change.
Therapy can be a beautiful and stretching experience; as we increase the capacity to experience feelings such as sadness, disappointment, or anger we also increase our capacity to experience joy, love, and hope. It would be an honor to be with you through the ups & downs of this process.
